EMC News 6/2000:
EMC is investigating a new generation of cable shields with
negligible weight!
Among different protection measures to ensure the good EMC behaviour of a system design one of the most important on system level could be a cable shielding. However until today this is correlated with a significant weight increase which especially in the aircraft domain is not appreciated.
Based on the fact that current cable shields (with some exceptions) are only effective in a frequency range of above 100 kHz we have been investigating a cable shield whose shielding properties start effectively in the range of several MHz and attains significantly better protection properties than the best metallic overall cable shields. At the same time, the weight of this new shielding is more than 20% less than the weight of comparable metallic shields.
